McKinney Early Childhood Music Program
Why Early Childhood Music? Zoltan Kodaly once said
"Music education begins nine months before the birth of the mother." Music education is not limited to what
children learn in school but begins developing from the time their ears perceive sound in the womb. Musical development
begins at home from the parents, from the television, and from other outside sources. The more a child is exposed to,
the more they have to compare. Early childhood music classes expose children to music in different meters and tonalitites
through singing, chanting, and moving. What better way to bond with your child than through sharing muscial experiences?

What will we do in Early Childhood Music Classes? Sing,
move and play! In both classes (infant/toddler and toddler/preschool) children will be listening, moving and responding
to songs and chants in various meters and tonalities, in addition to familiar folk songs. Scarves shakers, ribbons,
drums and other tools will be used to enhance response and keep children engaged. Newborns and less mobile infants will
respond in their own way through watching, staring, coo-ing and babbling. The parent is an important part of this program,
as what we do in class is intended to carry over to musical play at home. The toddler/preschool class (3-5 years) will
do the same as above, but will also be introduced to various instruments and extended activities. McKinney
Early Childhood Music Program uses philosophies based on the work of Edwin Gordon and a curriculum based on the Music Learning
Theory.
